Mr. Mendenhall,
This is Richard Miles, the gentleman that was falsely imprisoned in Texas. Well I am writting to let you know I won my case. It is the first case ever of an exoneration where there is no DNA or confession. My case strictly relied on Prosecutorial Misconduct, but I was prove Actually Innocent. The case Miles vs The State of Texas is now in the law books. Before I leave this earth, I would love to see someone freed because of my sacrifice. That to me makes the 15 years worth while. Thanks for the interview and maybe we can do something Bigger next. My number is 214-664-2786. Callme

I am a retired english teacher in the far-off city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada! I would dream to be able to take this course! Most of the resources for the course are sitting on my bookshelves, but would so cherish the handouts and assignments. lol I could be self-taught. I know! I know! The lectures DO make the course. At least, I've always felt that student attendance is imperative. My son explains that in his University program, he can collect readings/assignments on line and that attendance does not factor into his overall achievement. I think that's wrong. I enjoy your posts and appreciate you sharing this...content that interests me from several angles.

I was actually disappointed in Watson's book; one problem is that (unlike Faulkner), Watson did not have a real grasp of what lawyers do. Faulkner's observation fo details about interactions between lawyers and judges, even in lesser fiction like Knights Gambit, is truly remarkable. I re-read all of the legal fiction (and Watson's book) as a part of writing an article about Phil Stone (roughly, Gavin Stevens in Faulkner's fiction).

For a better take on Faulkner and the law, I recommend Susan Snell's biography of Phil Stone.

Fascinating take on compassionate questioning and its relationship to story. I teach business law to university business students and employment law to master's degree candidates and continually seek ways to engage students. Personalized stories make up a large part of instruction - combined with hands on experience. Face to face is easier in many ways because, as in a trial, you can adapt quickly to what is happening. Relating to online adult students poses other challenges. As you suggest, I put myself in the students' places and respond "in person" to their questions, whether expressed or divined from some other signal, such as a blank facial expression. Your well written scholarship has been added to my library.
